DNA Testing for Good Oral Health

Science is making leaps and bounds in solving medical mysteries. Many of the answers come from studying DNA. Dentists, along with other members of the medical field, rely on DNA to detect a patient’s risk of oral cancer and periodontal disease.

Dentists use two different OralDNA tests to find underlying issues pertaining to gum disease.  MyPerioPath®is identifis the type and amount of specific pathogenic bacteria known to cause periodontal disease. This OralDNA test assists dentists with risk assessment and enables them to design a specific course of treatment for the patient. Ideal candidates for MyPerioPath® testing are those who suffer from chronic periodontal disease and do not respond well to their current treatment.

The second type of OralDNA test is designed for patients who have a family history or periodontal disease or have a compromised immune system. MyPerioID® determines risk for severe periodontal infections. Other candidates for this test are those who have received therapy and continue to suffer from the disease. MyPerioID® is also recommended for patients who have lost their teeth to periodontal disease and are going to receive dental implants.

OraRisk HPV® is an OralDNA test that determines the risk for human papilloma virus (HPV) – related oral cancers. Candidates for this type of screening are those who are sexually active, show signs and symptoms of oral cancer, or present suspicious oral lesions.
