As a parent, you probably know how to handle vaccinations, well child checkups, flus, and colds. Do you know what your little one needs for healthy teeth and gums? Studies link overall health to oral health, so we now know that dentistry is a vital component of healthy living — even in kids.
Children should visit the dentist around age one, per the American Dental Association. This quick “happy visit” will allow your child to become familiar with our office and team. It will also give Dr. Lawson a chance to take a peek inside your baby’s mouth just to make sure there are no issues that need to be addressed. Starting around age one, kids need to add six-month hygiene visits to their six-month checkup routine. It is easiest to catch a cavity when small, and starting young gets them into the habit, making future visits easier.
Dr. Lawson is a mother, so she knows that you want your child to feel calm, safe, and protected. Our office offers techniques to help your little one feel comfortable.
We have iPods and movies to entertain your children in the office. This will take their mind off of dental procedures and help ease their nerves. If they’re still nervous, we might recommend laughing gas to make them feel calm and secure, during treatment.
Preventive dental care can help deter tooth decay, gum disease, and associated oral health problems. Dental sealants, for instance, cover hard-to-brush back teeth and form a barrier against tooth decay. We can also apply fluoride to strengthen tooth enamel. Fluoride is a naturally occurring element that attracts other minerals that deter cavities. While your tap water may have fluoride, if your children drink bottled water, a fluoride supplement might be recommended.
Our friendly, caring, and gentle team will provide a comfortable environment for your kids, no matter how young. Contact Lawson Family Dentistry at (515) 278-4366 to schedule an appointment for your child.
